As 2022 draws to a close, it is important to take time out of our busy schedules to pause and say “Thank you” to those who are most important to us. It is in this spirit that we extend a personal thank you to you; our partners, friends, members and colleagues who are the very heart and soul of Mars Society Kenya.
Here is a glimpse of year 2020 activities of the Mars Society Kenya.
Mars Society Kenya was honored and delighted to have been not only invited to attend, but to as well participate at the Kenya Space Expo & Conference. The Expo was held from 15-17 June 2022 and whose theme was “Leveraging Space Capabilities for National Development”. The event brought together industry players in an interactive forum that showcased current projects and innovations and provided an opportunity for linkages and collaboration. This being the inaugural space expo not only for the country but also for our organization, we had to come up with the best product to showcase. Our goals and mission are to prepare the general public to support Humans-to-Mars and inspire more Elon Musks around the world, with the hope of one day we Kenyans being involved in terraforming the Red Planet. Annually on 12 April, the space community commemorates the day the first human (Yuri Gagarin) launched into outer space with a remarkable event called Yuri’s Night. This year, Kibera Aeronautics & Space Academy (KASA), in partnership with Space Generation Advisory Council, Amateur Astronomy Society of Kenya (AASK), Leo Sky Africa and Mars Society Kenya, celebrated the event on 16 April at Tunapanda Institute, Kibera – Nairobi. The event served to reflect and take account of the past, get into the present, and project into the future of human spaceflight. The event focused on Taking Account of Space Activities in Kenya and Importance of Human Spaceflight.
During the event, Kibera Aeronautics & Space Academy – KASA cofounder, Adrian Schmidt, virtually delivered a keynote talk that covered a ‘Brief history of spaceflight activities’, ‘Careers in spaceflight’, ‘Later usage of spaceflight technology on Earth’, Cooperation between different Nations and cultures in spaceflight’, and ‘The role of private organizations in spaceflight‘. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and for Mars Society Kenya, this first step was taken long before our Inaugural Launch. Such activities included but not limited to ‘creating awareness in the country aimed at preparing the general public to support Humans-to-Mars’.

Isaac Gathu; Mars Society Kenya President/Founder wrote the abstract titled “SPACE BOOT CAMP” which was accepted for a 10-𝐦𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝐆𝐋𝐄𝐗) 2021, 𝐒𝐭. 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐠, 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚.
MISSION DIRECTOR IS ‘GO!’
On 14 July 2021, the Mars Society Kenya President/Founder (Mr. Isaac Gathu) held a consultative meeting with representatives from both the Technical University of Kenya (Mr. Constant Adero) and the Kenya Space Agency (Mr. Andrew Nyawade) where they finalized on the Agreement on collaboration and membership.
This paved way for willing members to join and also kickstarts our activities. A recording of the meeting is available here:

Here is a glimpse of year 2020 activities of the Mars Society Kenya and while we still haven’t quite reached the summit, there’s a long way down from where we started.
As an SES Participant we received;
In line with the ASI-Sapienza Agreement (between the University of Nairobi and the University of Rome, Italy), successful trainees will qualify to join the space port for internship, this period will serve as the officially working population of the port. The interns will be involved in all manner of the port’s operations.
“Bearing in mind the question on how we can set up a process to build capacity locally, we decided to establish a joint Postgraduate Course in “Space Mission Design and Management”, ……..not only students, but Professors at University of Nairobi and experts form Kenya Space Agency are directly involved in designing and setting a higher education program together with professors from Sapienza University of ROME and experts form ASI.”
